The most important part is determining if you have the mind set to see the build to completion, other wise you will have some vey expensive fire wood on your hands.

You will also have to deal with the people who will always tell you that you are crazy or that you will never do it.

The next thing will be cost. Boats can be very costly to build, but if you spread your purchases out over time, overtime buying only what you need to do the stage you are in you can manage your budget effectively. 

Finally, you must consider your skill level. I left this part to the last for a reason. Having no skill in wood working or welding in the case of a metal build may be a problem. While many have been built with little or no experience this is some thing that you will need to develop as you go along.
